2/1/22; Week 5: "Culture Paradigms"

 Culture Paradigms

I believe I never used the word paradigm, so I looked up in the dictionary and I found this: "model of something, or a very clear and typical example of something" (Cambridge Dictionary). While I was watching the video of brother Ivers about cultural paradigms, I understood many things about respect

It is impressive how paradigms cause us to interpretate the world around us. Many paradigms go deeper and deeper. What do we think hypocrisy, beauty, pride, humility, loyalty, etc.? It is true that they differ immensely from culture to culture.

In the other hand, "culture creates false needs and false problems" (Ivers). I stopped to ponder about this state. Many times we are influenced by the opinions of others. For example, with the TED talk of Delali Bright and how her perspective of weight and beauty changed in a impressive way. I asked to myself the questions she mentioned and wonder, "How often do [I] buy into a trend, an opinion, a perception, or accepted views of value, just for no other reason than to fit in?" Am I just imagining or creating this false problem? How society affects to this problem? In conclusion, "paradigms force you to interpret reality in a certain way" (Ivers).

As teachers, it is vital to consider this. We need to be aware of the different cultures we will encounter in our classrooms. In the first place, accept and embrace the different cultures, and encourage others to do so. It is a challenging task, but we will see the change in our students if we do it. I would like to be in a comfortable class, where my opinions are accepted, but more important, respected.

  1. I love that you mention asking these questions to help us interepert the world around us in our classrooms.

I think that when we do really question if we are creating those false problems, and open ourselves up to accept other culutal ways we become intentional teachers and global citizens. In my experinece it can make a real diffrence in our relationships with others!

  2. I liked this post very much. I agree with you, as teachers we have the challenging responsibility to teach, not only the subject but some values as respect and empathy.
