 Culture and Psychology

Culture and psychology together have a way of shaming people in situations where they would not be shamed in other cultures. Here it is where you can find the term "culturally-created shame". They are many standards in each culture that we do not know how to act when we go outside of it. In the same way, culture tends to bestow prestige on certain activities, and culture tends to bestow shame on other activities.

Culture also affects in our self-esteem. Most of the times the culturally-created ought self do not correspond to the real self. As teachers, we need to be aware of this because self-esteem is the most important factor in academic achievement. So, this is when we need to stop and ponder about this question: What are some of the culturally-created ought selves that maybe are irrational? Can you think in some of them?
To conclude, we all have a stereotype threat, where all the races have tendency to live up or down to those cultural expectations. It is hard to deal with these kind of situations, but we can work on it and try to be a better person and example.
