Culture Differences Concerning Time
Time, time, time... It is a difficult to talk about because each person conceive it differently. How important is time for you?During this week video, I did have not any idea about the concepts monochronic and polychronic. According to the website Habitgrowth, these two differentiate time in this way:
- Monochronic cultures prefer to focus on one thing at a time and without distractions or interruptions. Schedules and sticking to them is hugely important, as are previous commitments.
- In a polychronic culture, time is a more fluid, free-flowing thing which changes according to the situation. Often the focus will be on the task at hand rather than the timeframe of the task. (2019).
It is vital to respect each culture despite which one we have learned. It might be hard to understand it, but it is important to the other person as well. I found a chart that indicates which countries follow each culture:
Knowing about this had helped me to realize some patterns that I have that I never think about them before. As a TESOL teacher, I want to help my students to adapt to these situations, but also respect them, so others will see their effort too.
